Gordon N. Ray, a graduate of Indiana University, was closely associated with the life and work of William Makepeace Thackeray. His four volume edition of the Letters and private papers appeared in 1945-1946 and his two volume biography in 1954-1955. From 1963 to 1985 Ray was president of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. Biographical note: The U.S. Attorney General authorized U.S. Marshal Crawley P. Dake to arrest outlaws and restore order to southern Arizona in an April 3, 1888 letter. In the same letter, he was advised of the need to obtain vouchers from deputies for their expenses. In 1884, the government brought suit against Dake to recover $29,000 that had previously been paid to him and that was not subsequently supported by vouchers and receipts. E. P.
